This month we have a bonus round-up, highlighting some of our favourite advertisements for the holiday season. Some are heartwarming, some hilarious. Watch with us!
Ocean Spray Cranpus
Celebrity endorsements are always a hit, but a celebrity that has cult status and a pun-y name, dressed as a holiday horror, all the while hoarding all the cranberry products, that’s a hit!
John Lewis - Where Love Lives
Every year John Lewis, a British department store, has us passing the tissues over its annual and this year is no exception. John Lewis brings a son and father together with a gift that says everything - music! Of course, the company added a charitable angle, with profits from each ‘Where Love Lives’ record going to the Happier Futures fund, a youth charity. sobs
LOVE Lego
There’s no doubt about it, we ALL love Lego over here. In this holiday ad, all our favourite Lego minifigs, including many licensed characters from Marvel, Star Wars, and One Piece are cracking jokes about stepping on Legos and building an incredible winter wonderland, all through a rehash of Lionel Ritchie’s famous stalker song, “Hello.” Seeing the Lego cat build moving around gave us all the feels. Let’s be honest, Lego doesn’t need to advertise, but we’re glad they did with this one.
Barbour Jackets
Wallace and Gromit are stop-motion animated fixtures in Great Britain and around the world, so Barbour leaned on those cozy, family vibes … right up until Wallace is revealed to wear a mesh tanktop and tighty-whities in front of a group of carollers. It’s delightful.
Sobey’s 1991 Star of Christmas
It wouldn’t be Christmas without the Star of Christmas Sobey’s ad from 1991. Filmed in 1987, this ad ran on local TV with music created especially for the ad by Bob Quinn, who composed music for Sobeys for nearly 15 years. The choir and the school they’re performing in were in Halifax and it just felt really local and familiar. Hey, with nostalgia all the rave right now, maybe Sobeys should bring it back!
Wrap it Up and put a Bow on It
