We hear it all the time. I know I should be active on social media, but I just don’t know where to start! So, let’s get down to business. If you’re going to be on social media, you’ve got to be social. And if you expect any kind of return on your investment (of both time and, potentially, money) you’re going to want to get strategic about it. Here’s a simple strategy to build your Instagram audience. Let’s go!
Step 1: Who is your Audience?
To connect with your audience, you first have to know your audience.
How old are they? Where are they located?
What social media platform do they use most?
What are their hobbies? Where do they shop?
What do they drive?
Once you can confidently answer all of these questions, you’re ready to move onto step two.
Step 2: Find your Peeps
To find your audience on Instagram in hopes of starting conversations and letting them know you’re there:
Search by geographic location. Look up geotags for towns and cities, local hangouts, and attractions, to see who’s posting in or near your location.
Search through hashtags that your audience frequently uses. If they’re located in St. John’s, for example, they may be using the hashtag #yyt or #709. If they’re reading enthusiasts, they might be active using hashtags like #booknerd or #bibliophile. If they’re in a certain profession, like coaching for instance, you might find them using #coachlife or #womenhelpingwomen.
Step 3: Get Social
Take a strategic approach to mixing and mingling with your audience.
Set aside 10 minutes per day to search for three accounts belonging to your ideal clients. Spend a few minutes on each account liking and commenting on their posts. I suggest liking at least five of their posts, leaving at least one genuine comment (bonus points if you ask questions), and hit the follow button. This not only starts conversations, but it garners curiosity.
When I see someone crushing hard on my posts, I automatically go to their profile and check them out. Don’t you?
